Hospitality English

The English you actually use on shift — free to learn.

Hotels don't need IELTS scores. They need a receptionist who can handle an overbooking at 11pm, explain a bill dispute without escalating it, and give clear directions to a guest who speaks four words of English. This course teaches the specific English that comes up in real hotel and restaurant shifts - not textbook phrases, but the sentences you actually reach for under pressure.

Who it's for
Seasonal and hospitality workers whose first language is not English: hotel staff, waiters, bartenders, resort and event staff, receptionists.

Module 5 of 6

Housekeeping, Maintenance and Facilities

Interdepartmental coordination: priority room turns, precise work orders, and technical room troubleshooting.

Room status and housekeeping coordination

Front desk and housekeeping coordinate dozens of times per shift. In most European hotels, English is the working language between them — even when both sides are non-native speakers.

Vague instructions cause real problems. 'Clean room 302' is not enough. 'Priority turn on room 302 — arrival at noon' tells housekeeping where to allocate time.

Four statuses that need specific language:

Receptionist briefs a housekeeping colleague with a room-status clipboard before the colleague starts work.

“Priority turn on room 302 — arrival at noon.”

Expediting room cleaning for early arriving guests

“DND logged on 418 until 2pm — please service after 2:15.”

Coordinating room service around Do Not Disturb requests

“Late departure on 507 — do not enter before 1pm.”

Protecting late checkout guests from premature housekeeping interruptions

“Guest reported: the shower in 416 is not draining — standing water.”

Logging specific plumbing maintenance orders with symptoms and location

“The TV in 309 has no picture — guest hasn't complained yet.”

Proactively reporting technical faults noticed during room inspection

“AC in room 214 is cycling warm — please have engineering check before 6pm.”

Reporting climate control faults with a clear target completion window

“Guest requested extra towels and pillows in 507 — please deliver when convenient.”

Passing housekeeping amenity requests accurately

Guest room issues and repair language

When a guest reports a room fault: listen, apologise, log it, tell them what happens next, offer an interim solution if the fix will take time, and follow up.

You are not the technician. Do not tell the guest what the cause is unless you know it. Guessing ('it's the sensor', 'your phone demagnetised the card') sounds confident but is often wrong, and the guest remembers it when the fix does not work.

Common faults and what to say:

1/9
Maintenance worker checks a guest-room air conditioner while the receptionist explains the visit to the guest.
Phrases to keepClick audio icon to listen

“I've spoken to maintenance. They will be with you in 20 minutes.”

Giving a time only after maintenance has confirmed it

“Could you check that the balcony door is fully closed? In our rooms the air conditioning switches off when it is open.”

Only if your hotel's rooms really have door sensors

“I'm sorry about that. Let me make you a new key right now.”

Replacing a keycard without guessing a cause or blaming the guest

“I'm sending maintenance to your room now and will call you back as soon as I know more.”

Responding to a power fault without guessing the cause

“I've logged this with maintenance as a priority. I'll follow up with your room in 30 minutes to confirm it's been resolved.”

Setting an explicit resolution check-back commitment
