Module 2 of 4

Presentation standards

Bed making, the details inspections check, and consistency.

The bed is the room

Guests judge the whole room by the bed. Every hotel has its own standard and bedding, so learn your hotel's version, but most follow these steps.

Tap to continue

1. Strip everything and check the mattress and protector for stains or damage. Report a stain; never cover it. 2. Straighten the mattress protector so it lies flat. 3. Bottom sheet: centre it, then tuck it tightly under the mattress at the head, the foot and both sides. At the corners, fold the hanging sheet into a neat 45-degree fold (a 'hospital corner') before tucking it in. 4. Duvet: put on a fresh cover, shake it so the filling sits evenly, and lay it centred with the same overhang on both sides. 5. Pillows: fresh cases, plumped, placed the way your hotel shows, usually with the openings facing away from the door. 6. Smooth the top surface with your flat hand and look at the bed from the door, where the guest will first see it.

Speed comes with practice. Get it right first, then get it faster.

The details inspections check

Housekeeping supervisor checks a clean guest room from the doorway, inspecting presentation before release.

Worked example: a room inspection

Supervisors check rooms with a checklist. Here is an example of a completed one for a departure room (your hotel's list will differ):

Tap to continue

Room 318, departure, cleaned by: R. Entrance and door view: OK Bed: duvet overhang uneven on the window side. FAIL Desk, phone and remote wiped: OK Kettle emptied, cups clean: OK Minibar stocked to list: OK Bathroom mirror and chrome, no streaks: OK Hair on floor and in shower: one hair in the shower tray. FAIL Towels and amenities to standard: OK Bins empty, fresh liners: OK Windows closed, AC set to standard: OK Maintenance found: dripping basin tap. Reported to maintenance at 11:20.

The decision: the room is not ready. The two fails are quick to fix, so the attendant fixes them now and the supervisor checks again before the room is released. The dripping tap does not stop the room being sold, but it is logged so maintenance can fix it.
