Module 1 of 9

Station, measures and built drinks

Measure a stated serving. Read product labels. Build a carbonated order.

What you will be able to do

Measure a stated serving.

Tap to continue

Read product labels.

Build a carbonated order.

1/3

Prepare a clean station

Identify spirits, liqueurs, mixers and declared ABV before pouring. Set clean glassware, a jigger, spoon, strainers, tongs and an ice scoop.

Tap to continue

Use the scoop rather than a glass. Hold glasses away from the rim.

If glass breaks near ice or exposed ingredients, stop and follow the venue contamination procedure.

1/3

Recognise distinct spirit families

Pisco is a grape-based spirit, distinct from cachaça and from agave spirits. Cachaça is a Brazilian sugarcane spirit; tequila and mezcal are Mexican agave spirits with different production traditions and product styles.

Tap to continue

Tequila uses blue agave, while mezcal can use other agave varieties. Do not treat mezcal simply as smoky tequila or assume every bottle has the same intensity.

Read the exact product and label strength. Gin supplies botanical character; vodka is usually comparatively neutral.

1/4

Measure, build and clarify

Use millilitres as the controlling unit. Keep the jigger upright and read its marks; one US fluid ounce is approximately 29.57 ml, so a 30 ml convention is rounded.

Tap to continue

Build these highballs over fresh serving ice and add carbonation gently. Clarify mixer and citrus preferences.

Tonic, soda, cola, ginger beer and grapefruit soda have different jobs; an unavailable product requires a disclosed approved alternative.

1/3

Can plain soda replace tonic silently? No. It changes the drink; explain and confirm an approved alternative.

Why is 30 ml only an approximation of one US fluid ounce? One US fluid ounce is approximately 29.57 ml.
